Four days of ocean play, surf progression, and wilderness camping on the wild west coast of Vancouver Island.
Are you looking to develop your surf kayaking skills, build confidence in the surf zone, or simply spend more time playing in the waves? Combine that with beautiful coastal camping, good food, and a small group of like-minded paddlers, and you have the makings of an unforgettable expedition.
Vargas Island offers a spectacular setting for a surf kayak adventure, with expansive sandy beaches, exposed coastline, and the opportunity to immerse yourself in the rhythms of the Pacific Ocean.
This is not a high-mileage expedition. We aren't here to cover huge distances or tick off miles. Instead, we'll establish a comfortable beach base camp and dedicate our days to learning, exploring the surf zone, and enjoying the sheer fun of kayak surfing.
The Experience
Our expedition begins with a paddle to Vargas Island, with our route and timing determined by the weather, sea state, and group conditions. Getting to camp is part of the adventure, and our first challenge is learning to manage our loaded kayaks through the surf zone.
Once we've landed safely and established camp, we'll settle in, enjoy lunch, and begin our first surf session. We'll start by developing an understanding of the surf environment, reading waves, identifying suitable launch and landing areas, and learning the fundamentals of unassisted surf launches and landings.
Over the following days, we'll build on these foundations, progressively developing the skills, judgement, and confidence needed to play more effectively in the waves.
Depending on your experience and the conditions, this may include refining your timing, improving your boat control, developing more effective turning and manoeuvring skills, and learning how to work with the waves rather than against them.
There will be plenty of time to practise, experiment, make mistakes, and celebrate those moments when everything comes together. The aim is to create an environment where you can develop your skills at an appropriate pace, supported by coaching, practical feedback, and plenty of time on the water.
Above all, this trip is about enjoying the process. Surf kayaking is as much about reading the ocean, making good decisions, and finding your flow as it is about technique. With several days based in one location, we'll have the flexibility to make the most of suitable conditions and spend more time doing what we came for: surfing.
Life on the Beach
One of the best parts of this expedition is the chance to slow down and settle into coastal life.
Our beach camp becomes home for the duration of the trip. Mornings begin with breakfast and a look at the conditions before we head out for the day's surf sessions. Between sessions, we'll have time to rest, refuel, watch the waves, and discuss what we're seeing in the surf zone.
As the day winds down, we'll return to camp, prepare dinner, and gather around the evening meal. These sessions are a chance to share stories, reflect on the day's learning, and explore the theory behind the skills we're developing.
We'll discuss surf-zone safety, wave selection, risk management, and the decision-making that helps paddlers become more independent and capable in dynamic coastal environments.
And, of course, there is something pretty special about finishing a day of surfing, watching the light change over the Pacific, and settling in for an evening on a remote west coast beach.
What You'll Learn
This expedition is designed to help you become a more confident, capable, and thoughtful surf kayaker. Depending on your starting point and the conditions, we'll work on:
Surf-zone awareness: Understanding waves, identifying suitable locations, and recognising changing conditions.
Surf launches and landings: Developing the skills and judgement to launch and land independently in appropriate conditions.
Wave selection and timing: Learning to read the surf and choose opportunities that match your ability.
Boat control and manoeuvring: Refining your control of the kayak in moving water and breaking waves.
Safety and decision-making: Developing sound habits around personal limits, group awareness, and surf-zone risk management.
Confidence through practice: Building experience through repetition, coaching, and time spent in the environment.
Whether you're working on the fundamentals or looking to refine existing skills, we'll adapt the focus of our sessions to the group, individual goals, and the conditions available.
Trip Logistics & Details
Trip style: A base-camp expedition focused on surf kayaking, skills development, and wilderness camping rather than covering long distances.
Location: Vargas Island, off the west coast of Vancouver Island, British Columbia.
Duration: Four days and three nights on expedition, subject to the final itinerary and conditions.
Meals: Breakfast and dinner are provided throughout the expedition. Participants bring their own lunches and daily snacks to keep them fuelled between surf sessions.
Camping: We'll establish a beach base camp and remain based there for the expedition, allowing us to spend more time surfing and less time packing up and moving camp.
Arrival: Accommodation on the night before Day 1 is not included. We'll meet on the morning of the first day, ready to prepare and launch.
Conditions: Surf kayaking is dependent on weather, swell, tides, and the suitability of the surf zone. Our plans will remain flexible, with safety and sound decision-making taking priority over any particular session or objective.
Is This Trip for You?
This expedition is for paddlers who want to spend more time in the surf zone and develop their skills in a beautiful wilderness setting.
You might be new to surf kayaking and keen to learn the fundamentals, or you may already have experience and want to improve your technique, timing, and confidence. Either way, the emphasis is on practical learning, time on the water, and developing a better understanding of the ocean.
You'll need to be comfortable participating in a multi-day sea kayaking expedition, camping in a wilderness environment, and paddling in coastal conditions appropriate to the trip. We'll discuss your experience and goals beforehand to help establish whether the expedition is a good fit.
If you're ready to trade big mileage days for beach camping, wave riding, and a few days immersed in the Pacific surf, Vargas Island might just be the adventure you've been looking for.
Come for the waves. Stay for the wilderness. Leave with new skills, more confidence, and a serious appetite for your next surf session.
